FAQ - Drinking water

Where does the old dirt coming off from the pipes go?
In drinking and hot water systems it comes out from the taps and sanitary fixtures, mostly ending up in the drain. In closed systems (heating or cooling) a filter must be installed to take the dirt off.

Do we have to drink it? Is it harmful?
Old deposits and layers are dissolved in small microscopic crystals and at such low concentrations that it is not possible to visually detect them. The layers are mostly built up of the same minerals that water naturally contains, so they are not harmful.

Is the magnetic field harmful to my health?
The field is only active inside the coil pipe where the water is treated. The device is usually placed in the equipment room which is not occupied. Also, measured just one meter away from it, the strength of the field is about as strong as that of a toaster’s.

Doesn't the old pipework start to leak after removing the layers?
The layers inside don’t support or strengthen the pipes and if the plumbing is already in a very weak condition, it should be renovated as soon as possible. Naturally, we cannot bring back any of the materials that have already been lost because of corrosion.

How does it affect the quality and taste of the water?
In many cases the layers, dissolved metals and corrosion products (e.g. rust) are responsible for undesirable taste of the water. When the corrosion is stopped and the existing layers and deposits start to dissolve in a more controlled manner the quality and taste will actually improve.

Why isn’t technology like this obligatory for new plumbing and HVAC systems?
A question that is repeated quite often. We cannot give an answer ourselves since it’s not in our hands. But in many cases the constructors of new or renovated buildings have ended up protecting their new systems from the start after having found out or experienced the excellent results of the Bauer water treatment first-hand.

FAQ - Technical

Is one device sufficient for both cold and warm water pipes? What about the heating system?
It depends on how the system is constructed. If the Bauer water treatment is installed right after the water meter and before the manifold (distributor for cold and warm water) in front of the heat exchanger, one unit is enough in most cases. If there is a separate boiler for hot water, it may need an additional unit, e.g. to be installed into a dedicated tank circulation. The heating system (such as a radiator network) is typically a separate, closed system and therefore needs a separate device with an appropriate filter.

What should we do after our piping has been cleaned?
Once the problems have disappeared, the same device will remain in use to prevent the problems from reappearing and to offer on-going protection for the whole system throughout its life cycle.

Does it work with plastic pipes?
Yes it does since even plastic pipes could get blocked, especially in areas with hard water. The Bauer water treatment prevents the blockages from occurring. Additionally, most plastic pipe systems contain fittings, instruments and other components made of metal that can be affected by corrosion. 

How often do we have to replace the filter?
It depends on the condition of the system and how much dirt there is. Typically it varies from a few days up to 6-12 months after the cleaning has progressed further. Particularly in the beginning the inspection and replacement intervals should be kept short enough.

How much electricity does it consume?
Smaller units take about 35 watts and the biggest one less than 80 watts, so the electricity consumption and costs are negligible compared to the benefits.

Does it need maintenance?
The Bauer water treatment device itself is completely maintenance-free, only the filters used in closed systems need maintenance.

Is the flow direction important?
The flow direction makes no difference and the coil pipe can be installed either into a horizontal or a vertical pipe.

Is it difficult to install? Who does it and how much does it cost?
The installation is fairly simple. A competent plumber is able to do it in a short time with the help of the provided instructions. The installation cost is negligible compared to the benefits of the Bauer water treatment.

FAQ - Cooling

Does it work in systems consisting of mixed materials?
Yes, it does. For example, if you have plastic pipes with radiators made of metal it is very useful to deploy the Bauer water treatment from the beginning. Very often, problems begin to arise right after the start-up of such a system. Bauer water treatment will alleviate or prevent the problems completely and extend the service life of the system considerably.

Can we reduce or stop using chemicals altogether?
In cooling systems corrosion and the buildup of sludge have always been the main causes for problems. For example, in plastics industry the corrosion of the very expensive tools has led to the use of inhibitors. In most cases the result, as evidenced by water samples, has been the opposite: the dissolving of metals has only increased. After the introduction of the Bauer water treatment together with a suitable filter and only pure water in the system the corrosion has been slowed down considerably or even brought to a complete halt. In addition, the microbial growth has stopped eliminating the need for expensive biocides, which is a major advantage from an environmental point of view as well.

Does it work in glycol-based systems?
Yes it does. However, sometimes corrosion inhibitors are mixed with the glycol and the corrosion rate is actually accelerated. Pure glycol + water mixture is less harmful based on our experience.

Can we leave the chemicals in the system?
With Bauer water treatment no chemicals are needed. And since pure water has the highest heat transfer capacity, it makes no sense to leave the chemicals in the system. Therefore, the chemicals have to be flushed out of the system before the deployment of the Bauer device.

Does it affect the cooling rate?
The combination of pure water and clean heat-exchanging surfaces guarantees the best possible cooling performance. Even a thin layer of limescale or sediment acts as an insulator resulting in a substantial loss of efficiency.  Also microbial growth and the formation of biofilms can further reduce the performance of the system. All these factors and their negative impacts can be prevented or minimised with the help of Bauer water treatment.

FAQ - General

How much does the device save in heating costs?
It depends on the initial situation, i.e. how much sludge, deposits or layers have formed and gathered on the main system components - heat exchanger/boiler, the valves and radiators - during the time the system has been in use. Even a thin layer of scale or deposit on the heat transferring surfaces requires a substantial increase in water temperature and/or flow rate on the primary side of the heat exchanger to achieve the targeted room temperature. The cleaner the system, the better the efficiency and the less energy needed for the same heating output.

Do you supply the filters as well?
Yes we do.  Both the filters and the filter cartridges we deliver are of very high quality and designed to ensure the optimal filtering results in all types of closed circulation systems. For open circulation systems such as cooling towers we have specially developed high-capacity filters available.

FAQ – Heating

Doesn't the old rust and dirt cause blockages to valves when they start to move?
It all comes out in very small particles that don’t cause problems. In closed circuits a separate filter is always required to capture and take out the impurities.

How often do we have to check the filter, and is it difficult?
It depends on how dirty the system is. The replacement interval is easy to find out during the first few weeks after the installation. Cleaning, i.e. the replacement of the filter cartridge, is a very simple procedure and we provide the instructions how to do it.

What are the operating costs?
Smaller units consume about 30 Watts and the biggest one less than 80 Watts of electricity so the cost is practically insignificant. The additional costs incurring from the replacement of the filter cartridges are very small compared to the continuous maintenance and repair visits.

How can I be sure that it really works?
We take a water sample in the beginning and another one some 6-18 months later for control and comparison purposes. The samples are sent to an accredited laboratory for a reliable and independent analysis. In heating systems the deterioration of the efficiency will stop and begin to reverse. This is usually first noticeable in the rising room temperatures during the heating season, which in turn enables the downward adjustment of the supply water temperature. In addition to the gradual recovery of the efficiency, the functioning and operability of the system and its individual components - such as radiator valves - will also improve noticeably.

Can we really stop using chemicals in our heating system?
In a number of cases the use of chemicals has actually seemed to be the combining factor for abnormally high iron readings in the initial water samples. A high iron (rust) content causes a lot of operating problems and malfunctions as well as an increase in repair costs. With the help of the Bauer water treatment the dissolving of metals in the system can be minimised and the existing impurities taken out, which will ensure that the system will function as designed again.

Can we leave the chemicals in the system?
With Bauer water treatment no chemicals are needed. And since pure water has the highest heat transfer capacity, it makes no sense to leave the chemicals in the system. Therefore, the chemicals have to be flushed out of the system before the deployment of the Bauer device.

What if our water sample shows no problems?
This generally correlates with a lower corrosion rate. On the other hand, the combination of mixed materials and lower temperatures together with smaller pipe dimensions and modern thermostat valves with micro channels have resulted in increased susceptibility and sensitivity to even tiny amounts of impurities. In many cases the systems haven’t worked properly despite the water samples indicating no problems. After the introduction of the Bauer water treatment the problems have disappeared.

Should we install the device before or after the heat exchanger?
The positioning isn’t critical but our recommendation is to install the device before the heat exchanger whenever possible.

Where and how should the filter be installed?
The best way is to follow our instructions and install the filter over the system pump to ensure a sufficient pressure difference. Additionally, one of the two maintenance valves needed has to be equipped with flow rate adjustment.
